NFF News


NFF board member and Apple Inc. COO Tim Cook, an Auburn alum, gave the commencement address at his alma mater on Friday.

The NCAA announced its 2010 Public Recognition Award winners for teams who scored in the top 10 percent of their sport with the Academic Progress Rates (APR). The football teams recognized this year include: Brown, Bucknell, Colgate, College of the Holy Cross, College of William and Mary, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Davidson, Duke, Harvard, Northeastern, Northwestern, Presbyterian College, Princeton, Rice, Rutgers, Air Force, Dayton, Maine, Miami (Fla.), Notre Dame, Penn, Richmond, Villanova and Yale.
 

NFF Institutional Academic Members


Arkansas State joined the NFF as an academic member.
 

Chapter News


The NFF Iowa Chapter honored 15 scholar- athletes at its annual awards banquet on May 8. Iowa defensive coordinator Norm Park was the keynote speaker.

The NFF Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter held its annual awards dinner on May 10. The chapter honored 22 high school scholar- athletes. Tufts (Mass.) football coach Bill Samko was the Ron Burton Distinguished American Award winner and Boston Globe high school sports editor Bob Holmes received the Ed Schultz Contributions to Amateur Football Award.

The 36th Annual Moose Krause Memorial Scholar- Athlete Dinner was held Wednesday, May 12th, 2010. The event honored this year's class of Moose Krause Scholar-Athletes and featured a keynote address from Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly. Jack Favorite, son of former Notre Dame receiver and NFF high school scholar-athlete Mike Favorite, was among the scholarship recipients.

The NFF Northern Connecticut Chapter banquet will be May 16 at the Aqua Turf in Southington. Mike Savage (retiring CAS-CIAC executive director) will receive the Distinguished American Award and Chris Palmer (UFL Hartford Colonials Coach) will receive the Contributions to Football Award.

Former Purdue quarterbacks and Super Bowl winners-Drew Brees, Len Dawson and College Football Hall of Famer Bob Griese-are scheduled to attend the sixth annual NFF Joe Tiller Chapter of Northwest Indiana dinner on June 22. The quarterback trio will receive the Gold Medallion, the chapter's highest award. Former Purdue football play-by-play announcer Joe McConnell will receive the chapter's Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award. The chapter will recognize a total of 27 high school scholar- athletes.

Scheduling


Wisconsin and Illinois have moved their Big Ten match ups in 2011 and 2012 from Thanksgiving weekend to the first weekend in December... Boise State will open the 2011 season at Ole Miss... California will play its 2011 home games at San Francisco's AT&T Park while Memorial Stadium undergoes a long- awaited retrofit and renovation. Capacity for the games will be 45,000... UT-San Antonio announced an agreement with Houston to play a home-and-home series beginning in 2013... ESPN announced 16 game selections involving Pac- 10 conference teams for the 2010 season. Overall, ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 will combine to televise 20 Pac-10 home games with additional broadcasts to be announced as the season progresses. The first telecast will be Sept. 2 when USC visits Hawaii... CBS College and Division II have announced a six-game football television package for the 2010 season. The first game is Sept. 2, with West Texas A&M visiting Grand Valley State (Mich.)... Buffalo has extended its football series with Army and added Morgan State to its 2012 non conference schedule..

Scott Stricklin has been named the new athletics director at Mississippi State... Miami (Fla.) head coach Randy Shannon signed a four-year contract extension... Temple coach Al Golden's contract has been extended through the 2014 season... Under Armour has signed on as Temple's new athletic apparel outfitter... Kansas and IMG College reached a five-year extension to their media rights deal that now goes through the 2021-22 academic year... The Pac-10 has hired Creative Artists Agency to explore expansion opportunities and advice the conference on its next media rights deal... Alabama signed an extension with Nike through the 2018 season... North Texas athletics director Rick Villarreal signed a contract extension that keeps him with the Mean Green through 2015... Bridgepoint Education is the new title sponsor for the Holiday Bowl... Collegiate Images renewed content partnerships with Texas Tech and Illinois... The UNC Board of Governors unanimously approved the proposed funding of a football program beginning in 2013 at UNC-Charlotte... Brad Lampley has been named the chairman of the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl for 2011 and 2012. Lampley also serves on the board of the NFF Middle Tennessee Chapter.

Colorado State is honoring former tight end and Colorado Rockies President Keli McGregor, who passed away last month, with a memorial scholarship and an award. The Rams are holding Keli McGregor Day at its home football game Sept. 25 against Idaho... Gregory Duncan (Rowlett High School (Texas)) and Travis Plotkowski (Howard Payne University (Texas)) were among the recipients of the 2010 Field and Mary Scovell Scholarship... Arkansas State athletics director Dr. Dean Lee recently was selected as Distinguished Alumni of Henderson State University (Ark.)... The ACC held a groundbreaking ceremony for the ACC Hall of Champions at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex... UT Arlington's Trey Hillman, Lamar's Billy Tubbs and Sam Houston State's Dr. Thomas F. Davis will be inducted into the Southland Conference Hall of Honor... Former Pac-10 commissioner and NFF Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award recipient Tom Hansen has been selected as the recipient of the 2010 Dick Enberg Award by CoSIDA... Ohio State athletics director Gene Smith will speak at the 13th annual UK Sports Marketing Academy on May 11-13 at the University of Kentucky. Tony Barnhart will be the moderator during Thursday's panel sessions... Former Kentucky wide receiver Keenan Burton recently created the Burton-Taylor College & Academic Scholarship to recognize deserving high school students with monetary support towards their pursuit of college dreams.

Intersport will create and distribute an NCAA documentary this year and will begin planning the celebration of the NCAA's 75th Anniversary in 2013... The Colorado coaching staff is embarking on its first "state wide" tour beginning today with stops in Erie, Colorado Springs and Pueblo... 1999 Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne has been added to the roster for Badger Days 2010... San Diego State athletics is embarking on a seven-city caravan... LSUhead coach Les Miles read to first grade students in Baton Rouge as part of "Real Men Read"... XOS Digital announced the expansion of its instant replay services to include on-site game-day and bowl-game support options... The Associated Press has announced it will introduce a destination microsite for college football fans in August. The AP Top 25 poll will serve as the anchor for the site... Former NFL head coach Tom Flores spoke to the New Mexico State football team on April 28... Former UCF defensive tackle Michael Lynch was eliminated from American Idol last week after advancing to the final four.

Obituaries

Bill McElroy, a founding member of the NFF Memphis Chapter, died May 16. He was 80... Former Georgia Tech star Nick Rogers died at age 30... A memorial service celebrating the life of Dr. Joe Kearney will take place on May 30th on the University of Denver campus. Kearney, who passed away on May 5 at age 83, served as athletics director at Washington, Michigan State and Arizona State. He also served as commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference and was a board member of the U.S Olympic Committee.
